Acupuncture

Acupuncture can be used to help improve or cure problems your pet might have, including those related to the musculoskeletal, reproductive, neurological, or gastrointestinal systems. Acupuncture can also be used to manage pain and hasten recovery after surgery.

Acupuncture, which originated in China, has been used as a therapeutic treatment option for thousands of years. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the body is composed of several pathways called “meridians,” along which energy flows. When disease is present, energy is interrupted, or unbalanced. Stimulating acupuncture points along the meridians can restore energy flow, resulting in improved or cured health problems.

Because the needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin, they cause minimal or no pain and are generally well tolerated by pets. However, incorrect placement of the needle or inadequate sterilization can result in pain or complications, which is why you should only have a qualified practitioner perform acupuncture on your pet.

To determine if your pet’s condition(s) may be responsive to this treatment modality, please set up an exam with one of our qualified veterinarians.

In addition to our regular veterinary services, several of our doctors have studied Acupuncture and are competent in safely, and comfortably placing very thin needles, at known locations, to help with medical conditions. This ancient technique has many studies supporting the effects in modern times. The “point” is to return the body to a more ‘balanced” state. This translates to less pain, and improved function.

Many of our clients have experienced acupuncture for themselves. Most have seen a benefit for a variety of conditions ranging from arthritis pain and loss of function, to allergic skin problems, chronic diarrhea, kidney failure, and asthma. The same conditions have been successfully treated by us, for our animal friends, with very rewarding results. Acupuncture can be used to help improve, or cure these problems Acupuncture can also be used to manage pain, and hasten recovery after surgery.

“Jordan” is a curious two- year old cat who ventured into the clothes dryer. The owner did not know and turned on the dryer. The pet sustained severe burns, and hyperthermia. With acupuncture, we were able to bring down the pet’s temperature safely, and to treat the pain and burns as an added modality rather than medication alone. Jordan is alive and well thanks to the multimodal approach to her care.

“Cooper,” is a very sweet Dachshund, came to us paralyzed from a disc problem in his back. The client was concerned about his pet never walking again. With use of acupuncture, Cooper was out of pain and walking after four treatments. The owner was amazed at how his dog became so relaxed during the treatment. He now comes monthly for an outpatient laser treatment at the acupoints. He is walking very well, playful, energetic, and happy.

“Pippi” was paralyzed and we had tried all the medications known, in order to resolve his disc problems, with no success. At 13 years of age, the owner opted for acupuncture over surgery. After two acupuncture treatments Pipi began to move one rear leg forward. “Pippi” has been walking, running and comfortable for 3 years.

“Sita” is a 19 year old kitty who was acting very sore in the hind end of her back two years ago. Periodically she comes in for an acupuncture treatment and the owner reports that she feels much better.

“McGreggor” is a very gentle Scottish Terrier. He is 10 years old with a few problelms. Recently he was uncomfortable due to a non removable bladder tumor. He had acupuncture and Chinese Herbs.

“Roxy” is a beautiful 2 year old Mastif. She was diagnosed early on with problems in her hips and knees. She did not want to go on her walks or play and the owner thought she was just not active.

“Laxy” is a sweet little Maltese who was hit by a car and suffered severe head injury which caused her a great deal of discomfort. She was given traditional therapy immediately to help stabilize her condition with oxygen, and pain medication. In addition, acupuncture was used for her pain, and to stop her from having neurological problems such as seizures. It was also used to help her appetite. She was in the hospital for about a week before she could walk, and eat on her own. Each time she received acupuncture we noticed positive improvement in her overall condition.

Here are a few more stories of other pets who have benefited from acupuncture at our hospital:

“Coco” was a fourteen- year old kitty who was not eating due to nasal congestion for quite a while. With the use of periodic acupuncture, we were able to help her breathing so she had an appetite.

“Daisy” came to us in November, 2017, after a night of screaming in pain. She could barely move when she arrived at the office without crying out. She walked out much more comfortable before being given any other medications, wagging her tail, and was no longer painful after two acupuncture treatments. In addition, the owner noticed that she had not sat comfortably since her knee was injured years ago. After the first acupuncture treatment and some traditional medications for pain as well, Daisy sat normally and comfortably. Another example of using a combined approach with acupuncture and traditional medication.

These stories of our beloved friends are just a few of the pets we have been able to help through some tough times. By adding an old but very effective treatment combined with some traditional current medications we see faster and more complete success.
